Dear Mr Gordon

Complaint regarding increase in juvenile delinquency in neighbourhood

In the recent months, I observed that the number of juvenile delinquents in our neighbourhood has been on the rise hence, I began gathering feedback from my neighbours. I am writing you this letter to inform you that these juvenile delinquents are causing noise pollution, environmental pollution and social pollution.

During the wee hours, at night, the teenagers will strum on their guitar audaciously and sing at the top of their voices all through the night. Whenever they see an innocent and unsuspecting child, they will whistle and mock the poor, unfortunate child, probably leaving a huge emotional scar in that child. Such noise pollution is intolerable.

What is worse is that the teenagers play ball games without any consideration for the people and property that might be hurt or destroyed, respectively. After the teenagers leave, they leave litter scattered all over the floor for the cleaners to painstakingly pick up. Litter is an eyesore and will leave people a very ugly impression of our neighbourhood.

The teenagers also cause social pollution, a detrimental problem for the youth of our neighbourhood. Setting an atrocious example for the other youths in the neighbourhood and they could also start "recruiting" other youths to make even more nuisance in even more places. In order to stop the spread of such animosity, we must take action swiftly and surely.

I have also thought up a few suggestions as to how to eradicate juvenile delinquency, or at least minimise it. Firstly, a committee should be founded, with the collaboration of the Police, to recruit members of our community to patrol the neighbourhood on a daily basis. Secondly, whilst the frequency of patrolling is increased, there should be stricter enforcement of the law, ensuring that no litterer is left unpunished. Thirdly, rehabilitation should be offered to these youths to help them reintegrate into society as better people.

I hope that the problems aforementioned will be rectified as soon as possible so that the lives of the citizens of the Anderson neighbourhood can enjoy a more peaceful and less polluted environment to live, work and play in.

Thank you.

Yours Sincerely

To what extent is technology essential in your day-to-day life?

NASSPE2010 Section II Q3

Being a Generation Y baby, I have been exposed to much new technology ever since my childhood years. Since then, technology has transformed drastically with the appearance of the Apple iPad, iPhone, High Speed Internet, so on and so forth. There are many ways in which technology has moulded the way I live my life and hence has made itself somewhat essential to my daily activities.

Every day, I persistently check my smartphone for any messages or notifications that might pop up just so that I will be kept updated with the latest news from my friends and family, whether on Facebook or Twitter, and the occasional emergency message from a teacher to inform the class to complete a certain homework assignment. Sometimes, I log into my computer and start up Skype, which keeps me connected to friends and family all around the world, and start chatting with whoever is online.

Whenever I am given a project to finish, the first and foremost thing I would do is to search the topic on the Internet. The Internet gives all of us relevant information to whatever we are looking for. If we're looking for a picture of a cat, it gives it to us with a single click. If we're researching a planet that we've never even heard of, the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration's website is always there for us to refer to. In addition, the Internet keeps us updated with current affairs such as the health of the world's economy and the latest global health threats.

Technology also has impacted education greatly. The teachers in my school infuse rich new media into the classroom with the help of technology to make our lessons more interesting and enriching. Furthermore, students, such as myself, use laptops and tablets to work on projects which make work a lot more efficient and also enjoyable. This is especially so when I was doing an Inter-disciplinary Project which involved a lot of cooperation with my peers over many months. The computer and Internet made teamwork a breeze.

However, technology may not always be a necessity when it comes to work. One problem is the distraction technology can be to me. Whenever I use the computer to study, I always find myself straying away from the work to Social Networking Sites such as Facebook or even online games hence affecting my productivity. As such, I try to find better ways to study, like studying in a library or in school, to make technology inaccessible to myself.

Technology can also destroy physical social environments. When I meet up with friends after school, we usually have lunch before heading home. What I realise is my friends are always on the phone messaging or simply browsing the Internet even when people are around them. This reduces the amount of time we actually spend talking to each other and the physical contact.

As aforementioned, technology can help us whilst we research for projects however, the Internet can provide false and inaccurate information and what is worse is that students will be tempted to plagiarise. Plagiarism is a serious offence which can lead to a termination of grades in examinations and even more serious consequences especially at higher levels of education.

To what extent is technology essential in my day-to-day life? Well, I should say it has its benefits and disadvantages and whether I see technology as an essential part depends on how I can control my temptations to stray away from work and to reach out for my phone.

Graduated and School-less

Graduation Ceremony 2012 in Hai Sing Catholic School in our Graduation Gowns
It's the end of school in Hai Sing Catholic School and we're all on our tough and perilous journey to find the next school for ourselves. Merely 7 days before the start of the torrent of GCE 'O' Level Examinations for a whole 3 weeks!

It has truly been a wonderful and eye-opening experience for me in Hai Sing and I have learned much from my 4 years in this school.

All the friends I made, I hope, will remain my friends for many decades to come, especially those who are so close to my heart.

The teachers in Hai Sing have been very kind and caring, teaching us not only the respective subjects but also nurturing us to be young adults, imbibed with the correct moral values. Whenever we falter, they help us get back on our feet. Whenever we make mistakes, they are quick to admonish us so that we will learn the consequences of our actions.

I feel that the school has been a safe haven for us students because if we make mistakes, we are only punished within the school. However, once we are out there in the harsh and cold world full of poor, unfortunate souls, we are exposed to the wrath of the law. And shall I say, no one wants to mess with the law in Singapore. Once convicted, forever destroyed, irregardless of the yellow ribbon campaigns that have been around since I could last remember.

Many of us will remember the times when the Disciplinary Master and his subordinates never fail to catch us for whatever little misdeed we committed, including the infamous long hairstyles, cockroach feelers, pin up your hair and pull up your socks! But I feel that these little things will forevermore be etched within our hearts and will bring back the nostalgia when we look back at the 4 years we spent during our time in Hai Sing.

The littlest things, especially the happenings in the classroom, to me, contain the most sentimental value because many things that changed our lives happened in that very room which we were so used to, which almost became our second home. The classroom is a place where the occasions that are close to the heart happened; a birthday, a reprimanding from a teacher, teasing of friends and many more... Also, not forgetting the person who had been sitting next to you for an entire year, you and your partner will definitely share some common experiences and have sentimental attachments once we bid each other farewell.

Whatever the case may be, I just feel very sorrowful to have to leave my beloved classmates and teachers and my secondary school life for good. I can actually see why some people refuse to graduate and remain retained in the school. Moreover, with each day passing by, the closer we find ourselves to the oh-so-dreadful O-Levels.

I am truly grateful for what the school had provided me during my study in Hai Sing. A place to study, a place to meet my friends, a place to do crazy things. The canteen, no matter how dark and gloomy it seems, always keeps us full (during recess). The foyer, no matter how much it looks like a clinic, kept us together just before boarding a bus for a learning journey. The hall, no matter how small and crowded, gave us a place for celebration, worship and praise. "Thank you, Hai Sing. May the Lord bless you and your students and students to be."

The teachers who loved us so dearly:
Mrs Karen Wong (Fah) - Form and English Teacher
Ms Suhaila Mansor - Form, Co-Form, E-Math and A-Math Teacher
Mr Rafi - Co-Form, E-Math and A-Math Teacher
Mr Jeffrey Quek - Co-Form Teacher
Mdm Yasmine - English Teacher
Mrs Daisy Kee - English Teacher
Mr Zhao Sen 赵森!- Chinese Teacher
Ms Lindy Ong - E-Math and A-Math Teacher
Mr Evan Toh - Pure Physics Teacher
Ms Bharathi Jayakumaran - Pure Biology Teacher
Mr Mukmein - Pure Biology Teacher
Mrs Sharon Kang - Pure Chemistry Teacher
Mdm Kang Jew Koon - Elective Social Studies Teacher
Ms Nurhirwana - Elective Geography Teacher

There are many friends who loved, cared, tortured and tormented me whom I will cherish forevermore in my heart.

TOO MANY TO LIST! forgive me~

In our lives, we can only meet so many people so, we MUST love them as they should love us and believe that we will never forget each other no matter how far we may part.

Of course, there's much more to talk about. But it's nearly impossible to mention everything.  The memories created during the short span of four years in Hai Sing Catholic School will be in my heart forever and ever and always till the end of time.
